The hospice on the outskirts of Lucklum is a building with Neo-Romanesque and Classicist decorative elements, built around 1860/70 as a hospice, school, and kindergarten. It consists of a two-story main building and two single-story side wings. The main building has long been used as a residential space, while the side wings were previously used as a workshop and an antique shop. The design task was to integrate a single-family home for a young family within the existing volume of the southern single-story annex. Due to heritage protection, the exterior appearance could not be altered. The floor was lowered by about half a meter, allowing for two-story spaces within the original roof ridge and eave height. On the courtyard side, there are historically significant windows that needed to be preserved. Our concept envisions a long and narrow void to ensure these windows remain untouched. This void, along with another above the living area, is connected by a "bridge" linking the upper-level rooms. This creates an exciting contrast between spacious, light-filled living areas and cozy, efficiently designed private rooms. On the garden side, the historic windows were extended to full height, allowing the living spaces—due to the lowering of the previously elevated floor—to open seamlessly towards the garden.
