The Science Campus of the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt in Braunschweig combines international top-level research and scientific excellence with a unique work environment surrounded by natural landscapes. The design embraces the guiding principle of "Working in the Park" and develops it further by integrating the expansive forested areas into a forward-looking urban design concept. This concept not only creates spaces for scientific innovation but also ensures an exceptional quality of stay and work. A central focus was placed on establishing a hub at the heart of the campus to foster networking and exchange between science, society, and the economy.
At the core of the design is the newly developed boulevard, which serves as the campus's central axis. This boulevard connects seven carefully positioned buildings and opens up into a generous "clearing in the forest." The boulevard provides clear orientation and emphasizes the inclusive and welcoming character of the campus through its open design. Public buildings such as the library, conference center, and cafeteria, designed as transparent pavilions, blend seamlessly into the natural surroundings while offering high aesthetic and functional quality for visitors.
Another key focus is the design of open spaces, characterized by four thematic forest modules. These modules create specific spaces for activities and recreation, reinforcing the guiding principle of "Working in Green Environments" and positioning the campus as an inspiring location for knowledge work.
